The Vine 2nd XI welcomed newly promoted Tenterden 1st XI on Saturday with the weather a potential to play apart in the game. After the drizzle stopped and a shortened warm up the Vine were asked to bat by Tenterden with Willis & Piper opening up. They got off to a good start before Willis (31) departed with he score on 60. A couple of quick wickets fell including Piper (31) before Bowden and White ticked over the score in the middle overs. White fell with the score on 148 and this brought youngster George Van Der Westhuizen to the crease who along with Bowden (61) showed great shot making and brought the score over the 200 mark before George fell for 48 with 4 overs to go in the innings. Some late hitting from Robinson (22) and Cooper Fogarty (12) helped bring the Vines total to 273 from our 50 overs.
The Vine bowled economically in defense with Robinson taking a wicket and he and Van Der Westhuizen keeping Tenterden to 38-1 in the first 10 overs. More tight bowling from Cooper Fogarty and Bromley saw the opposition 67-3 at the 20 over mark with Cooper-Fogarty taking the 2 wickets thanks to sharp catching from White. A partnership between their number 2 and 5 saw them bring their score up to 125 before Bowden made the breakthrough taking the wickets of the opener (44) and the number 6 shortly after. Grobler (77) was then caught on the boundary by Willis off the bowling of Bowden and the Vine were on top with Tenterden needing 80 off the last 8 overs. Cooper-Fogarty and Van Der Westhuizen both returned to finish the innings and with smart death bowling kept Tenterden to 7 an over leaving them short of the Vines total ending on 245-6 and the Vine 2nd XI walked away with a brilliant 28 run victory.
The 2nd XI are now 3 from 3 in the league and next week take the trip to Old Wilsonians hoping to carry on the good form
